Unnormal Normalcy

Just News and Ramblings From Your Average Author

Free Speech

I have to say, I’m a little disappointed with the Supreme Court and its decision to uphold the “rights” of the Westboro Baptist Church to wave signs saying things like “Pray for More Dead Soldiers” and “God Hates Fags” at funerals for fallen soldiers. I will say that I agree that they have a right to push their hateful message if they choose to, as long as they just yell and carry their signs around – but this just seems wrong. They aren’t parading down Main Street doing this, they’re going to funerals and targeting the grieving families, telling them that soldiers are hated by God and that their son (or daughter) is in hell now – and good riddance, God is merciful.

Their message makes no sense to me. They think they’re giving the truth to grieving mothers and widows, fatherless children? Warning them of the dangers of sin? And they use “fag” to mean the exact same thing as “sinner.” If you die you’re a sinner, and if you’re a sinner you’re a “fag.” Notice how that process goes. Not “you’re gay, you’re a sinner” but “you’re a sinner, you’re gay.” Everyone. And everyone goes to hell, unless you’re in the Church, then you can make obscene signs of stick figure-men having sex and use words like “fuck” and “fag” and “shit” as if they come from God’s mouth, not yours. Never be ashamed of saying hateful things. That’s how you get to heaven. Everyone else is living in sin.

But if that’s your message, fine, that’s your message. Use the internet and throw a hater parade. Don’t go to funerals and harass families in mourning who just want to bury a loved one who died for his country so they can get on with their lives and hold him dearly in their memories. Don’t they have enough to deal with? Be a little bit like Jesus and love thy neighbor.
