The Warded Man Rant

Negative review/rant-y thingy. **SPOILERS**

Title: The Warded Man

Author: Peter V. Brett

Published: March 2010, Del Rey

Source: PaperbackSwap

Goodreads Description:

As darkness falls after sunset, the corelings rise—demons who possess supernatural powers and burn with a consuming hatred of humanity. For hundreds of years the demons have terrorized the night, slowly culling the human herd that shelters behind magical wards—symbols of power whose origins are lost in myth and whose protection is terrifyingly fragile. It was not always this way. Once, men and women battled the corelings on equal terms, but those days are gone. Night by night the demons grow stronger, while human numbers dwindle under their relentless assault. Now, with hope for the future fading, three young survivors of vicious demon attacks will dare the impossible, stepping beyond the crumbling safety of the wards to risk everything in a desperate quest to regain the secrets of the past. Together, they will stand against the night.

My Thoughts:

This started pretty good, then went downhill fast. I just stopped reading after Leesha decided to have sex with Arlen. Yep, you just got raped and you’re okay with that. And you just don’t care about your own values anymore. Really? You were the only strong female character in the entire book. All the others were not good to their men, controlling, and had no independent bones in their body. I’m so angry with this that I just can’t finish the last 50 pages. Women do not get over rape that fast, and do not start having sex with men they hardly know so soon after it. I’m just so frustrated with the terrible portrayal of women in this book that I will never read anything else by this author. This had so much potential, if only he actually thought well enough of women to make them more than sex-craving, totally dependent pieces of flesh. They were all exactly the same and very flat characters. The author’s sexism ruined the book.
